There was a lot of potential here! I liked this book well enough. I enjoyed the unique story line and Muslim rep but the writing lacked depth and nuance. Characters were flat and caricatures rather than "real people". Despite the really interesting way of retelling Beauty & the Beast story, I read with my mind more than my heart because there was a lot of "telling" vs. "showing". I really wanted to love this but the writing wasn't very captivating for me. But still think it's a good story. Would def give this to younger readers. Great for teens in a classroom library.

I took this book along to the salon with me today, and I finished reading it before my hair was done, so that should tell you how much I enjoyed the story.

the book follows the life of Asiya and Lila. Asiya has it all but still yearns for a closer relationship with her mother and friends, but one mistake takes her far away from her fiancé and family. Lila has already spent five years serving her father's murderer as a maid and has given up the idea of escaping until she and Asiya's paths converge.

the book is a great debut novel set in Ghana and centred on the life of Muslim women and some of the stereotypes they face. it also highlights adoption, family, and friendship.

it's a book that will take you through diverse emotions. you feel sad for the characters at a point. You feel the suspense wondering what's next, and you'll feel relief and hope after how events will turn out.

it was a great read, and the writing style is easy to follow, I recommend you check it.
