While the main story lacked some drive and emotional stakes (honestly it got a bit repetitive), the flashbacks and world building sections were extremely interesting and thought provoking, and were the most emotionally resonant parts of the book. I liked Mickey and his relationships with Nasha and Cat, but I wish they were developed more, along with the other side characters.

Despite the unevenness, it had a lot of humor and personality to make it an enjoyable and quick read. Additionally, there were enough moral questions, sci-fi concepts, and wittily delivered philosophy to keep this from being entirely a popcorn novel. I’m curious to check out the sequel.

Mickey7 (the character) is so deeply mediocre and lazy. I really identified with him. He doesn't want to be a hero. He doesn't want to be noticed. He just wants to be a medium person. (Too bad for him, but good for the reader, that he makes a colossal mistake that makes him entirely too interesting.) This society is what it would be like when there are no more humanities and everyone is a STEM major. Nobody knows any history and there aren't even any books to read or TV shows to watch. I think Murderbot fans would enjoy this book, but it definitely stuck out to me that these people have nothing to do for entertainment. Also, this book has a lot of humor, but it really underlines the fact that colonization is inherently genocidal.

This book felt like an example of an author who had a great world building idea but no plot to go with it. The stakes of the story never felt very high, and the most interesting part was the descriptions of what happened to other colony planets. It seems like a fun concept with no real execution, and the humor is pretty juvenile throughout.
