This is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice in which Elizabeth is actually a transman named Oliver and Darcy is very gay.
It had never occurred to me how easy it is to reframe Darcy’s outward behavior as that of a gay man trying to hide his sexuality and being rather awkward about it, but it works very well, since there is a clear contrast between his behavior in spaces where he feels safe.
Oliver is written quite well, with a strong emphasis in the book on his euphoria when dressed as himself and his close relationships with Jane and his father, which ended up being so wholesome and endearing.
Extra points as well for describing the actual foundation garments of the period (short stays) and creating Oliver’s book long feud with the busk in his stays instead of using more stereotypical corsetry just because it’s more dramatic.
The author does a very good job at asking how various characters would respond to the changes that come with our new romance, and while this means there are quite a few plot changes they all make sense and are in character both for the classic characters and for the changes made in this account

this was a nice re-imagining of pride and prejudice, it was a quick read and i think was a fun twist to the story.

as other reviews have pointed out there were some historical inaccuracies (mainly the clothing and some of the speaking was a bit too modern imo) but it didnt take too too much away from the story

(though the fact that bennets lived in london in this version it just made me so irrationally mad lol)

(also also i really also wasnt a huge fan of the Wickham and mr collins characterization, they were just so overtly "bad people" versus the original)

I love P&P and I love a good queer love story but somehow this still fell flat for me and I was bored most of the way through.
The writing is only okay and it’s like the author is so concerned with affirming the main character’s gender that he avoids conflict at all cause, which makes for a flat story and impedes character development. There is so much potential in a two identities storyline for dramatic tension and high stakes that deepen our love for the characters and keep us turning the pages but none of that potential was fleshed out. Also despite the trans positive message, the lesbian characters get thrown under the bus in this retelling so even in its job as queer remix of a well known story, it falls short.
There are better trans love stories out there.

A couple of story beats were changed a lot from the original Austin novel.  And some just tweaked. But not to the detriment of the story. Just in case you are looking for a 1:1 Pride and Prejudice just lgbt it's not quite that. But a good read nonetheless 👌
