This collection draws together folklore and legends from all over Scotland, ranging from magical to downright gruesome!
At the beginning of the collection, all of the tales are represented on a map of Scotland which shows where exactly the tales originate from, which I found incredibly useful.
Personally, I loved the tales explaining the creation of Scotland and the many Nordic influences on Scottish beliefs.
I also appreciated how many of the stories are written in Scots. It was challenging to read at points, but it greatly enriched the storytelling aspect and helps celebrate diverse Scottish dialects.
However, none of the tales are illustrated. For me, this is a missed opportunity as I would’ve loved to have seen the characters and legendary creatures depicted on the page.
If you are interested in Scottish folklore or folklore in general, then this collection is a great introduction.

J'ai acheté ce livre dans une petite librairie de Victoria Street à Edimbourg, et vraiment c'était une super idée à réitérer lors de prochains voyages. Lire un recueil de contes folkloriques du pays visité permet de découvrir des contes et légendes propres au pays et à sa région et d'en apprendre plus sur l'histoire d'une façon ludique et intéressante. Petit bémol pour les quelques contes rédigés en "patois" écossais, qui ont compliqué ma lecture, mais j'imagine que c'est moins gênant pour les natifs anglophones. J'ai beaucoup aimé me plonger dans ces contes, et ça donne envie d'explorer le pays de fond en comble sur les traces des héros de ces histoires.

Lots of fun stories that are heartfelt, meaningful and funny in a tongue in cheek kind of way. I feel like folk tale real estate is dominated by Brothers Grimm so it is nice to have some not so well known folk tales find a place in my head.

Why is there a kelpie on the cover when there isn't a single story about a kelpie in the book? I found this collection lacking. I would have liked more of a variety of tales, the ones in this were very similar to each other. I liked a couple of them, but there are much better books about Scottish Folktales than this one.

This is a well researched and wonderfully put together collection of folk tales from all over Scotland that really highlight and showcase how the different areas of the country have such vastly different stories connected to them.
I’ve always wanted to know more about the folklore of the British Isles and this seemed like a really accessible place to start. Each of the regions folk tales are narrated by someone who hails from that region so there is an air of authority and authenticity as you read through them that you might not get otherwise.
I would be interested to see if there were other books in a similar series as this is a good way of being introduced to a topic that you don’t know a lot about.
