I don't understand the hype on this one. I like the concept but it lacked the atmosphere and tone that makes folk horror special.

A couple of days after finishing I had to come back and up my rating because I can’t stop thinking about this story. It’s a tried and true schema of a child possession tale done very well.

The book wasn't scary at all. The first chapter was great so I was hopeful but that's the only part that was good. I didn't like the main character. He is a bad father and husband and does nothing knowing even though his daughter is being taken away bit by bit by the darkness. He makes his wife think she's going crazy for suspecting what's really going on while simultaneously not lifting a finger to save his family. He is passive throughout the book and the story would have been much better written from the wife's POV. I understand his past is connected with the present but that isn't much compelling either. If Jack had half the spine his wife did, this book would be much more interesting. He keeps saying history would repeat itself and that nothing would save his daughter because nothing had  saved him not realising that he is the adult in this scenario and he could do for his daughter what his parents didn't do for him. Jack's inaction was the reason I almost DNFed this book. I should have.
