Possibly my favourite read of this year so far. In the second DCS Kat Franks, AIDE Lock(Artificially Intelligent Detective Entity) and the FPU (Future Policing Unit) takes on their first live murder case and it is a doozy! "The body of a dead male has just been found crucified on top of Mount Judd, bollock-naked with his ears sliced off." Is the type of line that immediately lets me know I'm in for a crazy ride. Although an escalation from In The Blink of an Eye, Callaghan doesn't lose the soul of the characters, and in each their own way, the cast are developing to become a well fleshed out and entertaining bunch. Which makes the juxtaposition of Lock's AI learning all the more enjoyable as well. The pronoun discussion being a particularly sweet moment. The missing half a star is only because I don't believe that McLeish would have given them what he must have known would be a very public case from the start, having been so against the FPU taking a live case just moments before.
With hits of excitement and adrenaline, interspersed with genuine empathy, sweetness, and intelligence, Leave No Trace was gripping from start to finish and I can't wait to see what comes next from this exciting author.

Eh, this was heavy on social commentary side... A LOT, girl...radfem on max
And Kat is still bull headed, flubbing mistakes all over the place.
I hope the next book refocuses on the AI program and its complexities.

Leave No Trace by Jo Callaghan is a gripping crime thriller that pairs DCS Kat Frank with AIDE Lock, the world’s first AI detective, as they investigate a series of chilling crucifixion murders in the British Midlands. Blending traditional detective work with cutting-edge technology, the novel explores the tension between human intuition and artificial intelligence in the race to stop a calculating killer.
Book 2 in the DCS Kat Frank and AIDE Lock detective series was a really solid, satisfying read — a smart, twisty crime procedural with just enough of a futuristic edge to keep things feeling fresh. I didn’t love it quite as much as In the Blink of an Eye, but I really enjoyed being back with DCS Kat Frank and AIDE Lock; their dynamic continues to be fascinating, with that constant push and pull between human instinct and AI logic. The mystery itself was dark and compelling, and I liked how it tackled big questions without losing the pace or tension of a proper page-turner. It’s clever, well-plotted and left me keen to see where the series goes next.

This was a quick read for me as I was immersed in the story and what was going on and I felt like I was on a journey with the characters and couldn’t wait to see where it goes.
I enjoyed the perspectives from the characters and their different roles and following them on the investigations and also reading the interviews and the police meetings. It felt quite immersive as if you were following along with them.
Also enjoyed this as it was local to me and I could picture where places were which added to it for me
