I found this book enjoyable. It sees a former police officer found, murdered, with a door handle in his neck, in one of those spiffy new developments in Atlanta. Will Trent, and the GBI, have an intense interest in one of the developers of said building, so they fancy another go around with the guy.
The story is gross (Karen Slaughter has a… vivid imagination?), but it rattles along at a decent clip, and addresses topics that were seen as relevant when published. Some might dislike #MeToo, but this book handles it decently.
My one grumble would be that Slaughter likes to have 3 central(ish) characters. One is “good”, one is a handful. Trent has to balance the two. She’s done this before, but in this series, the handful is a step short of crazy town, which makes it harder to like. I get that this is a book, but it does feel like Slaughter is trying to hard to get us to like the ”good character” more.

Slaughter is a heavy writer. She freely admits that she thinks readers would not be satisfied with a "happy ending". A certain level of drama, agony, dread, and angst fuel her stories and give a kind of dark realism that happily-ever-afters do not have. However...this was a little too much angst for me. This was nihilism. And...ugliness. Don't get me wrong, it was well written, but there was a little too much grit and sorrow and hopelessness without any foil of hope. I do prefer a bit of happy. In fact, I prefer a lot of happy. Take me through the fires of hell, but put something good on the other side otherwise what's the point. This had no joy or redemption that I could find. So, although I did think this was a good tale, that Slaughter is a very good story teller, it left me feeling empty at the conclusion. For that I knocked off one star. C'mon! Slaughter, give us a little happy. Just a smidge.
