we love a short story collection and we accept that not every story in a short story collection is going to be an absolute banger

but most of these were absolute bangers for me
and the duds were, at worst, just a bit "eh"

the loosest of story rankings follows under the cut (but not any actual reviews - even though i did write up my thoughts after each story)
(it's important that my opinions remain emotionally-driven and completely unverifiable) (i'm just here for the vibes, baby)

the most delicious
Flowers
Playing house
Rath
The summoning
Such a pretty face
The carrier
What would you give for a treat like me
Saying its name breaks it
Sad Straight Sex at the End of the World

no thanks, i'm full
Break-up poem recited knee-deep in bog water
Big round ball of light and the water
Two truths and a lie
Nature morte
Only corpses stay
A different beat

4/5⭐️: queer, Irish modern folklore, with loadsa wee lesbians and plenty of horror. The first story, “What Would You Give for a Treat Like Me,” was one of my favourites: a post-apocalyptic horror with fairytale elements (think people turning into wolf cubs and gingerbread). I also loved “Flowers,” a powerful, witchy, sapphic love story, where two girls kissing makes the sky rain violets and peonies, but later causes tornadoes and landslides. “The Summoning” was another standout, it follows a girl who summons “an interdimensional demon from some kind of hell world” to her uni campus, with chaotic (and darkly funny) results. Like all short story collections, it’s occasionally a mixed bag, and some were more forgettable than others. Since all of them have apocalyptic vibes, there’s a little bit of repetition in the themes and in some of the description too. That said, this collection is really inventive, and if you enjoy horror, end-of-the-world vibes, and bodies doing strange things, you’ll find plenty to love here.

Absolutely superb, hot, beautiful, gay, disturbing, a lot of other words. I will think about a lot of these stories for a long time. I wish some of them were epic films. Just fucking great.
