What a chefs kiss of a book. Queer gothic horror. I actually think the conceit of the Eyes Throat Guts Bones categories is phenomenal. This book encourages you to rifle through it like searching for gold in a bog. The contents are not chronologically set out, but by their own horror. You are encouraged to flick through, back and forth, in each form of unpleasantness. Or, to read chronologically and experience the stories as a smorgasbord of unpleasantness. In any short story collection, some are stronger than others. But overall, they are all superb. Although not as “horrific” as I perhaps wanted, they are unnerving and thoughtfully written. They speak of something of queerness, of girlhood, of culture. A must read for gothic horror fans, even more so for queer women. I actually had a conversation with a queer friend a while ago, asking whether horror can be sexy. We both mentioned this book, before I had read it, but this confirms it : I think gothic horror is definitely a little bit sexy.

I liked the horror and gruesome aspect of the book. The short stories are interesting, the poems (?) were surprisingly interesting to read. But I wasn't hooked by all of the stories and had to force myself to read a lot of them. Sadly. Anyway. Interesting enough to give it three stars and I bet others might find the book even better. Short stories aren't my thing, I guess.

“Nature morte” is a must read damn

This is a gorgeous book full of sapphic horror and fabulist fiction, from post-apocalyptic survival stories, to the world destroying power of teenage romance, to the seductiveness of becoming the bride of a demon/bog witch/ancient warrior queen.

I loved the commitment to making these stories consistently lesbian ones, and how sexy and creepy and atmospheric the stories were. My particular favourites were Nature Morte, a gut punch of a story about grief, and Such a Pretty Face, an itchy tale of an identity thief.

What will the end of the world look like? Is it flowers raining down from the sky, an old man turning into gold, someone wearing a loved one’s face or a hole cut through a wire fence that is supposed to keep the monsters out?

In this collection of short stories you are confronted by an imaginative exploration of our deepest, darkest fears and desires. Lesbian horror meets magical realism in a writing style that is both captivating and eerie. This was so so good, emotionally tense and difficult to put down.
