This book has a main character, Raquel, that feels like an authentic teenage girl who is trying to make the best decisions she can under the circumstances. It has a really cute sapphic romance and while at the end, the relationship did progress a bit too fast for my taste, I liked seeing how both characters were there for each other. I also really liked the friendship between Raquel and her best friend, Aaron, and how supportive and understanding Aaron was.

I appreciated how many different horror elements this included and how well it incorporated them: a creepy game, a scary alternative dimension, zombies, giant insects, and a mysterious bad guy. I also really liked the connection between those horror elements and the history of the Bronx, gentrification, and racism. This book included some thought-provoking social commentary. I'll admit that while the connection to historic events was hinted at the beginning, the final reveal of that connection was a bit info-dumpy. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the way all the elements came together.

Excellent horror from a debut author.
I can see this as a film.

if you are a fan of Stranger Things, this is for you. What an interesting take on supernatural and otherworldly beings. The Echo is not dissimilar to the Upside Down, just with the flair and attitude of the Bronx. Very well done!

This sapphic book from childhood friends to lovers, creative zombie-hunting [immersed in exploring the impact of racism and trauma] is the best book I've read this month.

The Bronx has been plagued by mysterious disappearances for over a year. When Raquel’s crush Charlize’s cousin goes missing, they team up to investigate.

The first chapter is engaging and compelling; a paranoid boy escaping from something dangerous, all while dying? Give me more.

I really enjoyed this book. It tackles deep real life issues, using monsters, dangerous creatures, and internet challenges.

The writing really built the suspense and atmosphere. Everything came alive, making the Echo setting distressing and creepy. I could picture everything clearly.

The world building was not really explained, but as the story progressed I became invested and obsessed in the story.

All in all, this book was wonderful.

Cw : gore, violence, racism, gun use, police brutality, discussion of cannibalism, fire injuries/burns.

A definite page turner! The storyline is an effectively balanced paring of mystery and horror, interwoven with the history of the Bronx and a dash of sapphic romance. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

I really enjoyed this premise and I learned some history of the Bronx that I didn’t know, my only note is I kind of wish it had been a bit longer towards the end. The wrap up seemed like it happened very fast.
