Not for me. Se me ha quedado muy a medio camino. Tiene mucho potencial en todo, pero el desarrollo es muy plano y no acaba nunca de despuntar ni de interesarte. Pero creo que es una gran idea ejecutada de forma correcta.

I really liked the premise of this book, the idea of the game and the Echo and how it took them to an era of the Bronx history. Overall, this aspect of the book felt pretty solid. It made sense within the framework that was being set, it operated on simple rules and posed good enough challenges to keep the story interesting and tense. The resguardos as a real-life element that was added to the paranormal ones also made a lot of sense. I liked all of this.
What I didn't like was that I never really felt like I got to know the characters. I didn't even get a feeling for who Raquel was beyond that she liked to get good grades. Aaron seemed mostly reduced to his crush on Charlize and Charlize remained very one-dimensional as well. For a book that focused so much on community-building in its final message this was a bit sad because I never fully felt the connection between these characters because they seemed exchangeable.
The queer romance was sweet, although there were some confusing elements like whether Raquel knew she had a crush on Charlize in the beginning or not and her "contest" with Aaron was extremely awkward. But it was still sweet and the book was decently interesting.

This is my book clubs BotM for June and I feel so bad off the bat for not reading it sooner. I personally really loved the vibes of this book, it reminded me a lot of a NY/Bronx style Stranger Things. I enjoyed the mystery thriller aspect of it, as well as the history. The book was really fast paced, but overall it is a really good read.
I really liked the story the author was telling, I just don’t think it was very well written. There was a lot more telling than showing. The characters felt underdeveloped and the plot was poorly paced. I don’t understand how this won an award for best Latinx author for young adults, were there really not better teen books written by Latinx authors in 2022.
I listened to the audiobook so maybe the narrator played a role in how much I didn’t like this but I still think there was a lot underdeveloped.

I liked the writing and the plot of the book. However, I didn't find it to be very much like a thriller.

People are disappearing in the Bronx, including Raquel's a cousin of Raquel's friend. Together the friends try to figure out what is happening, why, and how to stop it. It turns out people are going into the underground at night for something called the Echo Game and disappearing. Those that come back have horror stories to tell.
I liked the premise of the book and the way Tirado incorporated the history of the Bronx into the story in a way that was meaningful and heart wrenching.
Still, I felt like this story could have used more oomph. There was something missing. It wasn't quite as suspenseful as I expected. Although I empathized with the characters from a conceptual level, it was hard to really feel who they were and what they were going through. I think the writing was a little too simplistic.
There are certainly teens and adults who will love this book, so if you like horror, fantasy, and books with a strong sense of place, it's definitely worth a read.
