I really wanted to love this book, as I love thrillers with queer casts and especially books that explore and challenge oppressive systems like racism, homophobia, sexism. Unfortunately, the story never really gripped me. It felt more like a high school lecture on poverty and red lining than it did a novel. It made me think of C.S. Lewis’s advice that one should show the reader what one means with vivid descriptions, rather than tell/lecture the reader.

I really enjoyed the premise of the book. I thought the story was paced well and told in an interesting way. I also liked the way the history was intertwined into the story. I think the “echo game” was a fun spin and engaged me as a reader. However, I found the characters to be a bit generic. I wish there was more dialogue or scenes that encapsulated the characters personalities. When they entered the echo, the mc talked a lot about how it changed her as a person (ie making her more violent) but there wasn’t much to compare it to in the first place.
Overall a good read. I listened to the audio but didn’t think the narrator did the character justice. I’d recommend this book if you’re into YA horror with well known settings (based in the Bronx NY) with heavy focuses on plot (rather than characters).
