I'm going to be honest - I completely forgot what this book was about by the time I picked it up after requesting it, so this was a surprise. Burn Down, Rise Up was creepy and intense at times, but perfectly balanced out with moments of familial love, friendship and romance for one hell of a ride.

I loved the creativity of the Echo, and how it tied into history, not just for one place, but for the physical location of wherever the people who played the game were. There's something so creepy about the way the Echo is so similar to our reality, but warped, where history literally comes back to haunt the living. The way it actively changes around the characters almost makes it reminiscent of a video game, with gangs and giant monsters trying to kill you as you play through it - only there's no beating the level.

The characters were all fun too, I loved Raquel and her sense of humor, and her relationship with Charlize was so cute! I do wish we had gotten to see her interact with Charlize and Aaron a little bit more, but they were all such strong characters that it didn't really matter.

If you're looking for a creepy horror or thriller, definitely try picking this up! It had me hooked from the start, had a cute sapphic romance, and really strong friendships. Parts of the Echo also reminded me of The Upside Down from Stranger Things, so if you love the show you'll want to check this out!

This was a little hard to get into but once the initial backstory dump was finished it moved pretty quickly and was well written.

The community aspect of this felt super forced and almost artificial, as Raquel doesn't lean on to many other people, but the idea was incredibly unique and the creepy factor was there

This book really keeps the mystery going the whole way through! There’s just something that feels like just before you get shivers down your back that stays there the whole time.

There is a challenge that you have to go to the subway / underground at 3am to visit The Echo, which the characters in this book decide to take part in as one of their friends, Francisco, has gone missing. Of course things go wrong and Charlize is left in The Echo.

This book genuinely has me swiping each page so fast because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen next, if they make it out of The Echo, if the fungal type infection that’s killing Raquel’s mum will win.

If I had to describe this book with one word it would be ‘tense’.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is up for a fast paced thriller with nods to Stranger Things or the anime movie … as The Echo is kind of like a ghost world, a memory a bit like the Upside Down. I am giving Burn Down, Rise Up 4 stars.
