“They are orphans again, with no true home but each other and whatever life they can make together on the other side of the sea.”

Well this book is honestly not as good as Six of Crows, but I guess that's to be expected seeing as this is her first novel. The writing style reminded me a lot of Divergent, and the book was fast to get through once I had time to sit down and read it. Comparing this book to Six of Crows is futile because Leigh Bardugo has obviously improved as a writer since writing this book.

The amount of different emotions I experienced reading this silly lil children's book is astounding. Like tell me why I was on the brink of tears when Alina and Mal were in the dungeon? Tell me why I nearly threw the book when the Darkling started his shenanigans? Tell me why my jaw hit the floor when Genya warned Alina to be careful of powerful men?

I genuinely don't think I can give a real review of this book because I am simply experiencing every emotion listed in the English dictionary. All that I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I cannot wait to pick up the next one. I'm actually so upset that I got a job in the middle of reading this so I couldn't finish it sooner.

Absolutely loved the pacing of the book, and it established the fantasy system that the Grishaverse lives in really well. At first my head was spinning from all the different words and terms being thrown around, but once you get further into the book, the explanations are naturally given so it isn't one big lore unload in the beginning.

You can see how this book starts the entire Shadow and Bone trilogy and it's an incredibly strong start from the plot, characters and lore/setting. A great read!

I loved this story! I watched the Netflix show before starting and I’m glad I did - seeing all the differences was so interesting.
Overall I’m obsessed with this world and the characters, especially Mal and Alina and their relationship. It’s not a perfect book but it’s very enjoyable and you should give it a chance if you plan on reading six of crows later for a good understanding of the world.
Can’t wait to continue with this series and all the sequel books!!
