In 2019, I wanted to rediscover a childhood passion of mine: Japanese manga. I started reading some of the titles I missed out on over the years and, let’s just say, I didn’t miss out much. However, I also never got around to the works of Naoki Urasawa, the highly acclaimed manga writer and artist who does mature — not adult, mind you — comics. Pluto is his dark, gritty take on Astro Boy, but it begins with a series of gruesome murders of humans and robots alike. The first volume is a fantastic introduction to the series, and the paneling work feels very cinematic. I also really enjoy the obvious references to Golden Age science fiction authors like Isaac Asimov (❤️) and Robert A Heinlein. The characters feel full realised, unlike the paper-thin caricatures you typically find in shonen comics. Also, no high school children, no scantily dressed maids or classmates and no teenagers trying to save the world by getting angry and powering up. I can’t wait to read the rest of it.

I am guessing this will end up being incredible. Urasawa is so good.

Anime, then original story, then this one. All exquisite.

The illustrations were detailed. The book itself was a quick read with quite a mystery. Some parts of the book were sad because you get enough of each of the person's story that if something happens to them you feel the loss. The book also ends with a cliffhanger. I was also sad because this is book one and the library does not have a record of a second book. Guess I will have to wait.

A new darker take on an Astro Boy story line?

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!

(in all seriousness, I couldn't find any complete set of english books to buy, but luckily my library had it) Just read the first one, I'm not disappointed. It's interesting enough and the art and backgrounds are really good.
