The twists and turns of this book!! Scrumptious.
“You’re my curse. Staying away from you, is like trying to hold my breath when the tide is rising.” His words dance around my head, the deep timbre of his voice titillating my senses. “I want to drown in you.”
I LOVED this book. Even any imperfections with reading, plot etc I still love love loveddd this book. I truly did not want this one to be over. Oh, to be loved by a man, who can't love. I liked the progression of the plot, the revelations that were thrown to us as we continue to read. The ending was wonderful, and what he ended buying for her while in the book store, was a shock to me! I was expecting the obvious, but he truly delivered. Lucien will be haunting my dreams for a while. I wasn't a huge fan of the MFC being 19, I think 21 still could have been a big enough age gap BUT, regardless I still love this story and would have loved another 100 pages. Oh and the humor? Loved the banter, loved the random pieces of humor, in such a dark book it really was nice to have!

This is my second Keri Lake book. It was not bad but it was not my favorite. Plot takes places in the past and present which is essential to the storyline and for Lucian. I wish I could see more of Isa and Lucian as a couple and seeing their relationship dynamic. As always the writing from this author captures you. I will still check out other works!
It was dark. I knew it was going to be dark. But man it was dark. And I loved every deprived second of it. Now please excuse me as I book a therapy appointment.
Ick!
A 19 yr old with a 33 yr old? Ick!
I give the relationship 5 years. Maybe 10 if they're lucky.
The age gap was just way too large for me. The female protagonist way too young and naïve. The MMC did nothing for me. I was too icked out.
I didn't mind all the dark stuff *shrug* - I did raise my brows at the child S-Abuse - but the age gap bothered me more than anything else... It just didn't FEEL right. Whatever.
I DNF'd @ 50% or something. Skimmed the epilogue and was left completely unsatisfied and angry!
Ick. Ick. Ick.

- I predicted every plot twist.
- The main characters had no chemistry together.
- The FMC was TSTL and pick-me. The MMC had zero emotional growth.
- The character I emphasized most with was Amelia and yet she was universally hated by all other characters. Every single person let this girl down, and no one had any empathy for her.
- There was no true motivation for the final confession other than to reveal the final plot twist to the main characters and readers.
- The piano skills of the main characters was very hyped in the beginning but then played no role later in the book. The MMC never taught the FMC how to read notes, and they only played together the one time. It was the perfect plot tool for them to bond over, and the author completely ignored it to instead *checks notes* have the MMC randomly buy the FMC a bookstore which would necessitate her driving into town every day to sell (or, not rather, as everyone is too poor to buy non-essentials) books to people who hate her and fear him. Okay.
- $1mil of cocaine is not a lot of cocaine. I imagine dropping its shipping container in the middle of the ocean and picking it back up at a later date cost more than it was worth. $7mil is nothing to a shipping magnate whose mother easily drops $300k on a single doll and is a low price tag to cut ties with the mafia. Why was the MMC acting like these dollar amounts were so large to him? He had to be paying more money annually to that stupid secret society.

Master of Salt & Bones by [a:Keri Lake|5335601|Keri Lake|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1569412450p2/5335601.jpg] is a twisted gothic romance with subtle notes of Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera. True to Lake's style, there are twists upon twists in a plot that is complex, unique and gripping. Add in a spooky castle built on top of bones, a demented woman speaking in riddles about the past, and a secret society and you have one hell of a harrowing atmosphere...
Potential triggers: abuse, murder, torture, mentions of suicide and suicidal ideation, missing persons, sexual abuse and assault, self harming behaviours, substance abuse, PTSD, mental illness, explicit sexual scenes involving knife play and breath play.
I recently read this story for the second time on audible. I did not write a formal review the first time around, so I thought I would write one now while it's fresh in my mind. If you follow me, you know I am obsessed with Keri Lake's books, so it shouldn't be surprising that I love this one! I highly recommend this audiobook if that's your thing; Ryan West and Stefanie Kay provide incredible narration that absolutely brings all the characters to life.
Master of Salt & Bones follows Isa Quinn, a nineteen year old woman that takes a job for the infamous Lucian Blackthorne, also known as the Devil of Bonesalt. The Blackthorne name is something of a disturbing legend in Tempest Cove; Lucian is rumoured to have gone mad and murdered his own wife and son, and the entire town believes that "if you cross paths with a Blackthorne, you're doomed to an unfortunate and indeterminate fate". Isa believes the rumours are just that: rumours. She views this high-paying job as a ticket out of Tempest Cove, where she has been treated as an outcast for most of her life.
Sighhh.. Lucian and Isa. They have a 10+ year age gap, and come from completely different walks of life, yet they fit together so perfectly. Realizing how similar these two are at their core is part of the magic of this romance. I adore this couple and their incredible journey.
I was captivated by this story from beginning to end, and clearly loved it enough to read it twice. What can I say? Lake is my comfort author.
Extras:
*Lake has an immaculate playlist on Spotify for this book!
*There is free bonus content titled La Petite Mort which functions as an extended epilogue. Highly recommend if you love this story. There is even some character crossover from her other books!
