I devoured this book! Another Keri Lake book for the win! This was utterly addicting and haunting and romantic. It was very unpredictable, especially that final plot twist. I adored the slow burn romance and the entire set up of this book. For a while, I wasn’t sure how the romance could possibly work given their few interactions but once it kicked off it was so delicious! A must read and I’m fully ready to read this author’s entire backlist. There’s so many great quotes in this book and choosing one was very difficult.

Did I just stay up until almost 1 am to finish this book? Yes I did. I know it is not impressing but did sleep well last night, and I was getting sleepy since 11pm, so I see this as an accomplishment lol.

So was it good? Yeah it was, duh see the rating. Was the plot-twist amazing? Yes it was.

Okay sorry, I am just tired lol. Lucian though OMG, yes please another book BF added to the list hahahahah. NGL, I am not a big fan of age gap trope but in this book I was like okay you got me, I mean as long as it was not mentioned much I did not care, honestly. Obviously if it was something her being 20 and him 60 I would gag and not touch the book so I rolled with it. And I was amazed, written so well, even if it was not action packed it kept me on my toes, legit two hours until the end I wanted to go to sleep but I was like nope I won't be able to sleep hahaha so read till the end and I have no regrets. I will be fine, I will have coffee :D

"Master of Salt & Bones" by Keri Lake is a dark and gritty novel that explores the depths of human darkness and redemption. While the book offers a unique and atmospheric reading experience, it falls short in certain areas, preventing it from reaching its full potential.

One of the notable strengths of this novel is Lake's ability to create a haunting and immersive atmosphere. The grim and desolate setting of the post-apocalyptic world evokes a sense of despair and foreboding throughout the story. The author's vivid descriptions and attention to detail paint a bleak landscape that becomes almost palpable to the reader. This atmospheric backdrop adds depth and complexity to the narrative.

The protagonist, Jule, is a complex character with a troubled past, making her journey captivating and in-tune with the dark tone of the story. Lake masterfully explores Jule's inner struggles and her quest for redemption, which adds depth to her character and engages the reader. The exploration of themes such as survival, sacrifice, and the nature of humanity is thought-provoking and adds weight to the story.

The relationship between Jule and Levi, the enigmatic and dangerous anti-hero, is compelling and fraught with tension. Their interactions are charged with chemistry, and Lake adeptly builds their dynamic throughout the narrative. The slow-burn romance adds an additional layer of complexity and intrigue to the plot.

However, "Master of Salt & Bones" has its shortcomings. One of the main issues is the pacing, which is uneven throughout the book. The story alternates between slow-burning character development and fast-paced action, which at times disrupts the flow and makes it challenging to fully immerse oneself in the narrative.

Additionally, the world-building could have been further expanded upon. While the post-apocalyptic setting is intriguing, there were moments when important details were glossed over, leaving some aspects of the world feeling underdeveloped. Further exploration and expansion of the world would have added richness and depth to the story.

Furthermore, the writing style, while generally strong, occasionally felt overly verbose and indulgent. Some scenes and descriptions were unnecessarily drawn out, causing the pacing to suffer and diluting the impact of certain moments.

In conclusion, "Master of Salt & Bones" by Keri Lake offers readers a dark and gripping tale set in a bleak post-apocalyptic world. While the atmospheric setting, complex protagonist, and tension-filled romance are strengths of the novel, the uneven pacing, underdeveloped world-building, and occasional verbosity prevent it from reaching its full potential. Despite these setbacks, fans of dark, dystopian romance may still find enjoyment in this novel, as it delivers on its promise of an intense and brooding narrative.

Book was pretty good overall. I loved the house of usher creepiness vibes that the work gave off and there were some great one liners, but overall the chemistry was missing for me. Plot was good, the use of background characters was great, and there were these moments that were so hyper-realistic that I loved, but the actual main characters and their romance kind of faded to the background.

There is a lot going on here, it really has more twists and turns than a maze. This does capture some of the feel of old Gothics but not entirely successful at it. One of the bigger issues I had with this was its very slow pace. I found myself getting bored and skipping ahead. I could skip ahead and jump right back into the story without being confused. I can see how a lot of people are going to like this book, but it ended up not really being for me.
