It's always a good time hanging out with Douglas Adams, but as usual, too brief - this felt like it just barely scratched the surface of a really good thing, then bam! The end, right before we can explore any further. It's like being at a party, someone says something really wild and intriguing, then abruptly leaves.

An amusing radio drama in many ways, but listening to the audio book was too confusing to follow while I was working. I couldn't keep the characters straight. I imagine it would be a great summer read.

Nice to read good old Douglas Adams, but the story was a bit slow.

The plot is slightly incoherent in this one. Also, I think he's trying to repeat the sofa joke from the previous book with the thing about the fridge, but the sofa was much funnier than the fridge.

Though not as well known perhaps as his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, the Dirk Gently books also showcase Douglas Adams' quirky sense of humor and subtle societal observations. Dirk Gently promotes himself as a "holistic" private detective. He justifies adding on personal expenses such as a new refrigerator to his clients' bills based on his declarations of the "interconnectedness of all things". If he gets lost or isn't sure where to go, he will pick a car to follow with the rationalization that it might not get him where he wants to go but might get him somewhere he needs to go. In the course of the novel, he finds himself trying to understand what relationships could possibly exist between a bizarre murder, a pop song, the explosive disappearance of a ticket counter at Heathrow airport, and the homeless population of London. The results are quintessential Douglas Adams.

This remains one of my all-time favorite books, by one of my favorite authors. This re-read was to plumb the content for locations I want to visit during my upcoming 42 for 42 trip: I am traveling to 42 places that occur in Douglas Adams' novels for my 42nd birthday.

I'm hoping to see Miss Schechter's view of the Park, the street the Draycott's lived in, the places Dirk couldn't buy a cigarette, and the train station in our world that is hiding the great hall of Asgard.

This was a great read. It was humorous the way all of Douglas Adam's books are. However, I enjoyed the first Dirk Gently book a lot more. It had a more 'holistic' mystery solving sense about it. This one wasn't as full circle as the first book.
