3.5/5 - absurd and good but not as good as the hitchhiker's series
Adams has a way of making you totally confused while keeping you 100% entertained at the same time. That's the experience I had with this book, I never really knew what was going on, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
This book is what I wanted American Gods to be. You’re dealing with silly material, allow the story to be silly. The gods themselves certainly won’t be.
Dirk Gently is a most interesting detective: smart and bumbling, he recognizes connections but doesn’t know why. The first three-quarters are fantastic, but it falls apart a bit toward the end. Adams seems to have remembered he needs to publish this book and he doesn’t care much for books over 300 pages. I felt a bit like Dirk at the end: seeing the connections but not quite understanding why they were there.
But what a brilliant gags are the Coke machine and fridge.

Adorabile.
Similar to the first in that the last chapters are hurried and overstuffed with information; in that Adams' voice shines through in hilarious narration and dialogue; and in that the titular character is the brightest spark. However, this sequel falls flat in several key ways: Where Dirk was the star of the first novel, he did not have to carry it the whole way through, and the supporting cast playing the part of the audience did a wonder. Here, though, Dirk's eclectic nature, while obviously amusing to follow, is not supported nearly as much. The holistic nature of the series also doesn't really play a part either; stuff just sort of seems to happen. It's all explained in the end, but again, the end isn't exactly flawless. Norse mythology isn't the best plot device here, either. It's not like it's a bad book; I'd place it on the 'good' side of the spectrum, but it's hard to stay invested. Only Adams' established voice makes this less of a slog.

This was a good one, but sometimes I have trouble following Douglas Adams story line and ramblings, but I’m planning on watching the series to see if it’s any good.
I fricken LOVE Douglas Adams, and his wacky sci-fi adventures. His writing is so witty and interconnected, that you know you must pay attention to every detail because it will all be important eventually. Very carefree and lighthearted, with just enough negative to add intrigue, without becoming overwhelming.
Not as good as Hitchhiker I felt, but with a slower, more thoughtful style. I felt he took a long time getting to the 'main action' of the story and then finished it up a little bit lickety-spit, but I liked the characters he created and the interwoven stories.
