Another Dirk Gently book--great story, great writing, so much fun. Not vague or edgy, just solid. And I kept thinking it would make a good movie, except for they can't really seem to translate Douglas Adams' humor to the screen (see: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).
On par with the first Dirk Gently, in my humble opinion; dare I say, maybe even better? The pacing of these books is an acquired taste, I think: you're in the dark for the most of it, wondering how on earth everything that you're reading can be related... but be patient, just enjoy Adams' witty one-liners and absurd characters, and when you get to the last few chapters everything comes crashing together. I love that there are things I didn't realize straight away, from the first and second book, about how everything does fit together: for example, It was so satisfying knowing what Dirk doesn't at the end, because most of the time you know that he's on to something but you're just cluelessly being pulled along - I didn't get the same level of satisfaction at the end of the first book, which took longer for all the implications/connections to sink in for me.
Spoiler
I forgot the details about the lawyer's and his advertising wife's car from the scene in which Dirk meets them, and so the bit about the possibly blue BMW in the 2nd to last chapter went over my head at first. Also, exactly who's house the fighter jet destroyed, which is obviously what makes the last line of the book so perfect and amusing: "he turned to the front page to see if there was any interesting news."
Another quirky winding story from Douglas Adams. I have so much fun reading these books and greatly enjoy the randomness of things that later on become significant and are barely explained. You really have to puzzle out what's going on and working out what all the small links are. Douglas Adams isn't for everyone as he has a very distinctive way of writing but you must at least try him once.

I think it sort of falls apart in the end, in an "oh, I guess it's time to wrap all this stuff up, eh?" sort of way, but it's an incredibly entertaining romp along the way. Very funny and memorable.
Well....
I usually thoroughly enjoy British humor. I adored Hitchhikers Guide. This one was just a tad too disjointed for me. I read it at night, and probably forgot good bits of it, so I just struggled to follow a coherent thread.

Dirk Gently + Norse mythology should = five star book. But this pales in comparison to book 1, there wasn’t really a plot of any kind, Dirk didn’t do anything detective-y or holistically. What felt like the first act of a plot came 2 thirds into the story, and the ending sort of was… nothing? Kate was the only interesting character, and even then she didn’t do much or interact with Dirk much. Book 1 was so brilliant, funny, clever and exciting to read. This is comparison feels like a first draft of some ideas.
It wasn’t a bad book, and it was still enjoyable to read. It was just aimless and underwhelming.

A brilliant sequel. What an amazingly odd but fantastic novel.
