What a delight! Loved an adventure with the context of mesoamerica and a less put-together ending.
2.75/3
The World was lush . A vast amount of mythology, engaging magic with hints of mystery and even mention of some necromancy. I appreciated the rich culture , i was intrigued by the moment in time that was captured in this book . I found myself relating to Casiopeia on more than one occasion . I appreciated her individuality, her compassion , her fire and at times her naivety. That being said , I disliked more things about this book than what I liked .
I’ll start with Martin , because he is truly a detestable character . In no moment in time ( not even the end) did I enjoy his character . The explanations of why he was the way he was , is not enough for me . His one dimensional way of thinking had me constantly finding myself with my jaw dropped in disbelief . He regularly tried to justify his way of thinking with ridiculous excuses . Luckily I was born in the 90’s , because with men like Martin I wouldn’t have survived . I needed an antagonist with more depth. That goes for the Other Lord of Death too .
Secondly : With all the detailed descriptions of places and things , many times over explaining of a moment I was disappointed to find that not one of them was for the relationship between the main characters . Her writing kept us at arms length in regards to any romance and at many times tantalized me with promises of more . I wanted so much more from these characters . With Vucub-Kame having so much passion for power , I wanted the same from Hun -Kame’s turning into a human & loving her. (Which we got towards the end ) . The tiniest glimpse right before it was all over . Really left it with something to be desired .
Lastly the ending . Maybe it was because I was already on a decline seeing how most of the story had played out already. Yet I still had the smallest of hopes that the author would at least give me something .
I can understand the ending and I realize that this wasn’t solely a romance story . I appreciated that she finally got something she had desired for a long time . However with every other chapter mentioning of a want for acceptance , love , freedom , passion , among other things . I thought for sure I’d get more than 5 pages of feelings that seemed to come out of no where (maybe I missed it somewhere) .
Also does anyone else feel like it took longer to get to the Jade Palace , than to get to Vucub-kame?
For all of its wonder & beauty , I felt like I barely got any substances. I felt like there was so much potential . I really wanted to like this book . Yet by the end I was disenchanted.

I liked Casiopea and Hun-Came and their relationship a lot.
Yanno, I really did enjoy this. A nice, straightforward adventure with a lovely protagonist and a nicely built relationship with her partner in crime that never felt rushed or forced. I liked the locale and found all the lore and mythologies woven into it very interesting. But there was just something a little off. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but it just wasn’t very exciting often. More of a quiet adventure I suppose?

this was so good and i knew what was going to happen in the end lowkey bc they kept hinting but i didn't want to believe it... kind of mad
this was 10% disney story (about 3% princess and the frog, 7% coco to be specific), 25% hadestown the musical, and 65% modern-day myth. it was delightful and just the right amount of bittersweet.
