Moreno-Garcia really nailed the style of writing that is particular to mythological stories and it is by far my favorite aspect of the book. However, it is also what kept me from enjoying it as a work of fiction.
Casiopeia Tun, in her role as the main protagonist, feels completely superflous. She has very little in the way of personality; her most notable trait is to serve as a source of sustenance for Hun-Kamé. Because of this, the romance between them feels very lackluster and it was hard for me to care much about what happened to her character.
On the whole, I didn't dislike reading it due to the writing, but the story and character development left something to be desired.

Although I was reading this book as words on a page, it felt as though I was hearing someone recount this story as though they had told it a million times before, with fervour and love of the tale. Like we were around a fire together, huddled close and staying quiet to hear each word uttered… the voice in this novel was stellar
Laden with cadence and culture, this story dives into Mayan mythology, leaving space to learn alongside space to become enraptured. It’s fast-paced, bright, and filled with characters that are so easy to love (and who occasionally get called out for their choices, we love self-awareness)! I really enjoyed this one

SMG’s best work I’ve read! Ugh it’s so good. It’s everything she writes well with an amazing ending and stellar worldbuilding. Really there’s nothing wrong with it outside occasionally pacing but that’s a me problem. Sometimes it lacks a punch. A must have for anyone interested in Mexico, Maya cultures, and buddy road trips with a twist.
