This second installment was better enough than the first book that I'm looking forward to reading the next one. Jane, as a character, feels a little more fleshed out, a little less cliched. While the Beast segments aren't my favorite parts, they feel a little more natural in this novel- perhaps I'm just more used to them? Or maybe the author is just a little more polished?
My favorite parts are when we discover more about vampire history or more about Jane's personal history. Finding out about those background elements gives a real flavor and depth to the story I feel.

Once again, really enjoyed this re-read by audiobook. I can't say enough good things about the narrator Kristine Hvam...I love all her voices.

I really liked this one. Jane is on the hunt for a rogue-maker. Molly's come to NO w/ the kids, and Leo's still upset with Jane ... which makes things pretty tense throughout the book.

Witches come into play in this story ... and things get really hairy towards the end.

Jane picks one of the three (my 2nd pick for her) at the end. We'll see how the relationship goes from here.

Such a strong, gritty UF series. I don't know why it took me so long to get to the second in the series. Sometimes I have to be in the right mood, so I am glad I was in that mood and ran across BLOOD CROSS on Mt Git'r'Read.
Quite a lot going on in this book. War is coming to New Orleans, war between the factions of vampires. Children have gone missing. Tangled in all of this, Jane still has to keep secret the fact that she is a skinwalker. She knows what the vamp factions would do with this knowledg as well as the people she knows as friends and as close to family that she has. Only a chosen few know her secret and she needs to keep it that way.
Beast makes me grin. I think everyone has their own 'Beast' inside, Jane's actually manifests.
Very glad I have MERCY BLADE, next in the series, ready to read on Mt Git'r'Read. It is bumped to the top of the stack.
Hellah awesome, Faith!

Lost some respect for female MC, due to hook-up with player Male. Author conveniently left out, and failed to address issues mentioned in first book.
Like the fact he was using and having sex with a woman, the same day he's hitting on female MC... yuck

Excellent world building and characterization. The detailed explanation of the origins of the vampires and their unique brand of politics is distinctive and intriguing as is the information on the witch covens and their cold war with the vampires.

The plot revolving around the creation of new, rogue vampires and the attempt to keep them sane by sacrificing witch children is fast-paced and absorbing, especially as the villains soon hit very close to home.

Jane is a fascinating heroine and the dynamics of her connection with Beast are particularly compelling as they must coexist within the same body mass and work together for shared goals yet have an almost adversarial relationship. The secondary characters are also fleshed out more - Leo is having trouble coping with his grief, Molly and her children are staying with Jane, which leads to some cute domestic scenes, and Jane must deal with the two men in her life. This is actually, the weakest aspect of the book.

While some UF readers may not consider this a drawback as romance is not usually the focus of the genre, the author, nevertheless, introduces at least two possible love interests but fails to sufficiently develop the relationships. George (aka Bruiser) Dumas is seriously sexy and shares an intense chemistry with Jane. Unfortunately, he is also a blood servant, which lends a certain ickiness to his character and makes Jane's preference for the second leading man, Rick LaFleur, quite understandable. The problem here is that Jane and Rick lack said chemistry and he comes across as more of a consolation prize.

On a final note, Khristine Hvam's narration of the audiobook is incredible as always. She has an amazing ability to make even the most mundane passages come alive.
