Overall I like it but I can't ignore the fact that these characters think the role of a woman is to get married and have children.

Akito wants to write manga, so he convinces Moritaka, a classmate who can draw, to create a manga with him. Conveniently, Moritaka's uncle was a manga artist and writer who worked himself to death. And Moritaka's crush wants to be a manga voice artists. Akito even manages to arrange a situation that leads to the young lady promising to marry Moritaka when they have both successfully achieved their dream. This book chronicles their initial efforts to create a manga they can sell to a publisher.
This book proves the adage "there is a manga for everything". This manga is about making manga. Highly meta, this could have been brilliant. Instead it is dull as dishwater as the boys conduct research on what is popular in manga and come up with their answer to that. And so I put it aside, which I rarely do.

Muy interesante por ahora!! Ya quiero saber si estos chicos tendrán éxito con sus mangas!!
Volume 1 of Bakuman introduces Moritaka Mashiro, an 8th grade student with decent grades and a habit of drawing in his notebooks during class. His drawing talent is noticed by Akito Takagi, fellow and best student in Mashiro's class. Takagi attempts to persuade Mashiro to join him in creating manga--he'll write and Mashiro can draw. Takagi's a skilled operator and manages to get Mashiro's crush, a classmate named Miho, involved, climaxing with a humorous scene in which Mashiro ultimately agrees to Takagi's plan. They know it will be grueling and require sacrifices, like giving up on any sort of elite schooling, but at the end of volume 1 they're dedicated to their goal.
This is an interesting story and I may grab subsequent volumes. The characters are enjoyably authentic, the artwork is high quality among manga, and the story is inspirational--how can I not pull for these young men facing terrible odds? The characters' view of the role of women is questionable, but growth in this area may be part of the overall story--they're in middle school, so I expect they'll grow of the course of the 20 volume series.
I'd recommend this to any teen or adult manga fan. I notice that this series is not as popular as other current manga titles at my library, but it might gain more interest if Death Note fans knew this series is by DN creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. If nothing else, I'd hope those fans would at least give this first volume a try.

I mean parts of it were a little misogynistic and problematic but I really enjoyed it and will definitely be continuing on.
