I enjoyed this for the most part, but it's very difficult to ignore all the sexism in it. Hopefully it gets better in the next few volumes.
My first Manga book! I have grown to really love my graphic novels. I know I need to read Manga for my job. This one was suggested by our visiting author and I really enjoyed it. The reverse format of manga does take a little practice. It was a different and honestly refreshing read. I will read volume 2.
Wow I loved the references to other manga, especially this teams manga, Death Note. There was one thing about stereotypical masculinity that was a little iffy for me, but overall I really loved this first installment. On to the second one!

I didn't enjoy the mysoginy and some of the more nonsensical parts of the plot. At one point it felt like the writer that wanted to be a mangaka was forcing the artist to become a duo. That didn't sit right with me and so I lowered the rating. Nontheless, it was an entretaining read and managed to get some chuckles out of me. The mangakas that made both bakuman and death note work great together, to make engaging and well paced stories (at the beggining at least)...even though a little flawed.
The casual sexism threw me off guard... It's one thing if actual teenagers talked like this, now that we have loud incels online I would just chalk it up to these kids being under bad influence but a grown man writing these dialogues and then there's no follow up on shutting that down from other characters is just utterly disappointing.
The reason I picked this book up in the first place was because I got "barakamon" (my best friend's favorite series) confused with bakuman...so jokes on me

I picked this because I liked the premise- 2 kids want to become a manga writing/drawing team. It was fine but super redundant. They just kept talking about their dream over and over. It would have been better if they’d brainstormed a bunch of their own story ideas. I liked the drawings. It was sweet and old timey for a YA story. But it could have been told in half as many pages. Outdated male/female character types, too simple and straight forward for me to want to continue with the series.
This book is so blatantly sexist. In part of the book it pretty much says that women should only get average grades because “she knows by instinct that a girl won’t look cute if she’s overly smart” it also says in the book “She doesn’t feel any pressure like we do about our future and whatnot” (when was this book written, the 50s?) and finally, it says “she knows what it means to be a girl. she knows by instinct that the best thing for a girl is to get married and become somebody’s wife.” The book speaks for itself. Don’t read it.
Dit heb ik vast ooit leuk gevonden, maar met alle praat van “a real man does this” en “that’s a dream a woman would never understand”, gaat de lol er snel vanaf.
Great art and highly likeable characters, though the switch of the two students into mangaka happens a little too quickly for me. The relationship with Azuki, the love interest, is also kinda thin, and most of the female characters are stereotypes. That said, still a very well made manga about making manga.
