A nice deviant from the work that Sanderson usually writes. I really hope that it turns into a mini-series, because the first part was really promising and had a nice Matrixy vibe to it.
I'm not really sure how to categorize this one outside of "fantasy". Sanderson has, as usual, crafted an amazing world that sucks the reader in and feels completely developed from the first page. This is really a "Matrix" type story that sort of tips that trope upside down and has its way with it. It's only 87 pages long so writing about it is really hard without spoiling anything. But that's really what continues to impress me about Sanderson. He uses less that 100 pages to craft a story in which the characters know they're in a Matrix like situation (you find this out in the first 10 pages, it's not really a spoiler), develop a hero, arch-enemy, love interest, and a revenge plot. What it takes to make a story like this rich and not use a world you've already created is an impressive feat. If you have an hour this is a really great way to kill it.
3.5 stars. I thought the world was interesting and that more stories could be told in it.
A little rough or unpolished in places, but this is probably due to the format. The world-building is fascinating and raises further questions. I hope, that like Legion (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13452375-legion), that he continues this story.

Una storia che ci mostra un onnipotente Dio-Imperatore, immortale, unificatore del suo mondo fantasy, dotato di un'arcana magia con la quale ha fatto avanzare tecnologicamente il suo mondo.
Solo che, poco a poco, scopriamo che questo Dio-Imperatore è un "Liveborn", contrapposto ai "Machineborn".
Cioè, lui è una persona reale, più o meno, nata in provetta e tenuta in vita in enormi laboratori in una Terra ormai al collasso, la cui mente viene tenuta in uno stato di attività e di pace in questo mondo virtuale creato per lui, con regole proprie di questa ambientazione, con sfide poste davanti a lui dai programmatori\custodi.
Gli altri, tutti gli altri, sono entità virtuali create per popolare il mondo, ognuna con la propria specifica programmazione cui si deve attenere.
Alcuni, pochi, sanno la verità. Gli altri credono di essere reali.
Anche se, in effetti, vista la situazione chi può dire che solo i liveborn siano reali?
A questa tematica si unisce quella sul libero arbitrio, sul senso della vita, sulla loro condizione di creature in gabbia.
Con un finale che non ti aspetti.
Un racconto perfetto, autoconclusivo e che ti lascia con il desiderio di leggere altro da questa ambientazione.

I will be honest...I am not sure I understood it, I was initially frustrated, then intrigued, then perplexed and lastly quite sad. So I believe it is still worth reading, because it takes a skilled author to make you feel all of these things within just a few pages.
