Although this is the abridged audiobook edition of the original book, it did a good job.
It was interesting, insightful and uplifting. He did a good job shortening his/Starbucks' story.
Definitely want to read the unabridged version though now.

Very interesting look at how Starbucks was born. Howard Schultz essentially never takes no for an answer.

This book was written and published over 20 years ago, and it is very interesting to see how Starbucks has panned out. I only picked this up after watching a MasterClass presented by Howard Schultz. It was amazing, so I figured I’d read any and everything by him. And, I think this book was as good as the MasterClass.

That Merlin-like quality that Schultz points out is very much the case. He is a visionary and a darn good businessman. In the MasterClass that was produced a few years ago, had the very same optimistic tone as he had 20+ years ago in this book!

There are a ton of inspiration nuggets in here for any one yearning to scale their business. I think a lot a business owners could benefit in referencing this book, I know will.

Although it was inspiring to hear that Schultz upended his steady career for a feeling that coffee shops would thrive in the US after learning about its impact in Italy, I ultimately felt like this book glossed over the struggles and was more of a highlight reel to his career as a businessman. It's definitely interesting to read about his thought process on expanding a traditional local business to an international chain, but I would have also liked to hear what didn't work along the way vs. their successes (expanding globally, breaking into different food groups like ice cream, etc.). The pacing of the stories also drags by the last third, which brought down the beginning excitement of this coffee journey. It's worth a read if you're a Starbucks fanatic or want some inspiration on different business tactics.
