For fans of Bear and the Nightingale or Spinning Silver, this book reminded me of those in the most delightful way. Mischievous Folk, little creatures, and a snowy and icy remote setting. I loved the curmudgeon nature of Emily and her determination of research. She had a hard time relating socially to others and was unapologetically herself which I adored. Poe was a favorite side character and such a highlight of this book with his faerie dealings and fur coats. He remained me of the Suriel from Acotar in some ways. And Bambleby was another favorite! His selfish & aloof nature kept things light as well as his adoration for Emily. I loved when he went on his cleaning sprees to distress 😂

LGBTQ+ rep: F/F side character relationship

I absolutely loved this book. I read a library copy and plan to go purchase my own just to have. It was such a fun read. I loved the abrasion of Emily versus the whimsy of Wendell, not to mention each villager was their own unique character without bogging down the story. This was just such a fun and lighthearted story. Highly recommend!

Reads like journal entries (which it is), but also doesn‘t feel that way (which is good). I will be reading the next book! :)

Great audiobook readers and compelling lead character. I really enjoyed the interspersed fairy stories and the slow build found family threads. The ending felt a little abrupt, but seeing it's the start to a series makes sense.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Emily and Wendell had an excellent dynamic with each other, the writing was well executed, and overall the story was just a lot of fun.
Emily was very clearly autism-coded, and I just really appreciated that aspect of her character as well.
Overall, I just truly enjoyed this story and it may be one if not the favorite of the books I've read in the past few years. I very rarely talk about the books I am reading to my family, however with this one I could barely restrain myself. This book appealed to me greatly.

The felt fairly cozy, low stakes conflict, not sure if that was the intent. Loved watching the MCs' relationship blossom from work rivals to lovers, thoroughly enjoyed reading the side characters too.

Clever, atmospheric, giggle-worthy, self-aware, written for fairy-tale lovers.
