Very eery, extremely gripping and frightfully predictive of some technology we have nowadays! (Though of course not this extreme)

Eerily prescient.

I can't believe this was written in 1909????
The only reason why I picked this short story is because I had an exam on dystopia and, besides those 2010-ish YA books, I barely know this fictional genre. Also because it’s E.M. Forster and I had read Maurice a few months ago and absolutely ADORED it. Anyways, I had low expectations but oh boy you’re telling me Forster wrote this over a century ago?! The characters are literally giving Zoom conferences while being confined in their individual rooms. Like???

The story itself is quite simple but I feel like there’s so much to say about it and so many interesting ideas! I really loved the way academia was depicted, how it values commenting over experiencing or creating and ends up losing touch with reality. I was surprised to realize that it was also a theme in Maurice

Anyways, such a great short story and I really recommend giving it a try!
