This collected set represents a transition in the Fables world: After volumes of build-up, war comes to Fables, leaving grimness in its wake. This should come as no surprise to Fables' fans, as the series has never been one to shy from hard truths or dire consequences. While its source material is apt to leave "happily ever after," Fables constantly reminds the reader that real life can be messy — and no character is safe. This is made abundantly clear in the war's aftermath of "The Dark Ages," as Bill Willingham, et al, introduce a new big bad that is more terrifying than the Emperor. In the Fables world — and maybe ours, too — war may solve one problem, but it doesn't fix all. How this plays out in subsequent volumes will be interesting to see.

Reading this volume of Fables (Deluxe Volume 9) was bittersweet. Will the final war with the Adversary commencing there was a lot of blood shed as many long time Fables characters die, in particular my favourite character. Willingham’s writing continues to amazing as he keeps his story fresh & moving in a all-new direction.

A mixed bag. Just when I was sure I was in for another entire volume revolving around endless battle scenes in a drawn out war story, the book (FINALLY!) took an interesting turn. There were a couple of major character deaths, as well as the introduction of a powerful new villain in the second half of the book. Final “adventure” was irrelevant fluff, not very interesting, which rounded out my overall rating to ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.

Ripped my heart to shreds, but characters have a tendency to come back so fingers crossed.

Seriously concerned for my Fables children though ><.

Well the battle that underwhelming to say the least. Not sure what I expected but after 8 books, I just wanted more. Should be interesting to see if the series still has legs after this.

Gripping and epic. Another great chapter (or several!) in the Fables saga. It's just so annoying that these deluxe editions are only released every six months...

This series is an entertaining page-turner and I've read my way now through nine collections of stories in a one week marathon. Yay me! I now desperately need water and a protein bar or I'll faint. ;-)

Another book that it took me an unfortunate amount of time to read and then was totally sped through. This was a particularly amazing volume in this series, if I do say so myself. It was pretty much chock full of drama from beginning to end. A lot of tragedy has befallen these characters, and I'm so curious to see how they deal with everything that's happened.
