Nice to read something a bit different. The cruelty is hard to read for animal lovers. Our main character, Buck, is a bit too perfect.

I had forgotten how brutal this book is. The protagonist, the dog Buck, is taken from his home and sold to a sled team in the Klondike. His early months away from home are horrendous. Yet this is a story of survival and Buck’s transformation is masterfully told.

Just re-read this classic for the first time since high school. (We hiked around his ranch at Jack London State Park a week ago so I was inspired.) I was continually struck by the fact that though this short novel was written over a hundred years ago it does not read like an old story with lots of archaic language. It could, for the most part, have been written last week. A wonderful page-turner. If you haven't read it in as many years as me...pick it up again!
