I can't believe that students have to read this book.
"It was all well enough in the Southland, under the law of love and fellowship, to respect private property and personal feeling; but in the Northland, under the law of club and fang, whoso took such things into account was a fool, and in so far as he observed them he would fail to prosper."

Well... It's A Book... I was able to finish this book but did not come away with anything other than a history lesson in the backround with a story about a dog.
More thoughtful read than when I was young. I was struck by both how realistic and fantastic this story is, all at the same time. Hard balance to strike, but London does it.
I was a little too young the first time I tried to read this as a child and had to put it down. By the time I picked it up again, I had read nearly every dog book marketed to children and was ready for something more than the typical Lassie-like plot of dog makes world better. Buck's story is so much more than the average dog story. He's a dog that learns to kill or be killed, and yet he also shows love in the end that, as an adult, completely moved me. Buck easily goes on my list of favorite dog characters.
One note about this edition: I hate the cover. It's such a brutal and dark story and the cute cover targeting children just clashes horribly. If I ever find an old edition with a better cover, I'm getting it.
