For some reason, I have a knack for picking books with large, difficult words to read out loud to my kids. That aside, we all enjoyed this book a lot. Very vivid, sometimes graphic descriptions. Found myself almost tearing up on behalf of the dogs at one point.

This has always been one of my favorites classics because of the protagonist’s perseverance.  The ups and downs that lead him back to his roots are what makes the story great.

Jack London is the King!
"There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive."

I don't deny that this book is very well written: the imagery, the emotion, the cycle through the hero's journey. However, the sharp racist turn that this book takes in the last third lost me. I know the book is an old classic and it reflects the beliefs of the time, but since it caught me completely by surprise, it just left a bad taste I my mouth. I want to like this book, but all I can remember right now are the slurs.

I know a lot of people love this book, but it definitely wasn't for me. I will say, I'm not a huge animal person. I was really bored during most of the book, the plot felt so slow and I just didn't care about the dog (or any of the characters). If it hadn't been so short, I wouldn't have finished it. It also had a lot of animal cruelty and fighting and that bothered me. It wasn't a great read for me overall.

I liked the prose more than the story
