I don't know if I've read this one before, but I enjoyed it as an adult. This was a lot more brutal than I expected from a children's book, but it was the brutality of nature and survival in the Canadian wilderness. There were places where I was hanging on to every word, wondering what was going to happen. I loved that this was told from Buck's POV and I also really enjoyed hearing about the Klondike Gold Rush, dog sledding in general, and the cruelty and kindness of man, and the loyalty of a dog when it is deserved. I loved the wager that was made on Buck and found myself totally on the edge of my seat waiting for the result. I had two recordings of this, both by excellent narrators (John Lee and Pablo Schreiber) and I went back and forth about which one I wanted to listen to, but ultimately went with Pablo Schreiber because the British accent of John Lee just didn't work as well for this story. He was totally perfect for this story and I would definitely recommend his recording.

A manly book about nature and man and manly stuff and lots of men and manly manliness in the form of a manly dog. An ode to the perceived and coveted perfect "natural" masculinity. Or maybe I just interpreted this book poorly.

Very quick reread of a childhood favorite. As a kid I loved dogs and wolves so I reread this many times. As an adult, the themes of the evils of capitalism and colonization resonate in a way that whooshed over my head as a kid. Fun to revisit books and gain something new from it.

White Fang was always superior to me so I'll have to reread that as an adult and compare

This is the first time I’ve listened and it wasn’t bad but I think I prefer reading Jack London. Still love this story and I think naive read it maybe a dozen times or so before this. Can’t wait to go see the film now and maybe refresh on some more Jack London as well.

read for a class in high school... or book club?

Black Beauty but with dogs.

Fast paced story about a normal family dog that is forced to become a sled dog. Interesting to read as some parts are written directly from the dog's point of view. Action packed and satisfying all the way through.
