Literally everyone needs to read this book - non-fiction but reads like a thriller

Quite informative, definitely attempts to teach the difference between fear and worry, how to understand what our bodies try to tell us, and ways to keep safe. Sadly there is a need for this type of guidance, and decades after it was written it's as relevant as ever.

I'm glad I listened to the abridged version - I don't think I'd have the attention span or interest for the full book, but there were interesting sections here. The examples/scenarios are definitely dated, but some of the case studies did help drive home specific points:  when to listen to your gut, how to explicitly say no, why it's better to ignore or cut contact than engaging (because even saying "don't contact me" is furthering contact).  Essentially, it boils down to "figure out what your instinct is, then listen to it."

I will buy this for every woman in my life. Gavin de Becker validates the rightful fear of the dangers women face every day. His book is written so that it’s 2 parts crime thriller/case studies and 2 parts pure insightfulness. He brings up the odd feelings one gets when they aren’t quite sure why, and explains the why hidden under the surface. Long story short, our intuition is a gift and we must listen to it every time.

Would like even more example stories. A good book, especially for women.

I read this for a book club. I have heard of this book before and some things about it surprised me, but overall, I think the focus on individual action to the exclusion of systemic cultural issues kinda drove me nuts. I mean, the crime wave in the US had already crested and violent crime was down year-over-year for a while before the book was written, but you'd never know that if you picked this up. I appreciated the support he gave women and their instincts, but he could have come down harder on the patriarchy and the ways we encourage men to violate women's comfort, let alone bodily autonomy. It's just a very 90s away of looking at crime and its prevention, and I wish it had been updated instead of reissued with absolutely no new content. Also, one can write for the layperson and still help them see the underpinning of your thought and research, but unfortunately, no citations are offered for the content in the book.
