I read this book when I was in elementary school and decided to revisit it as an adult. It's a very simple adventure tale but some of the themes and story elements make me realize this it's a great prelude to some of the denser high fantasy like the Lord of the Rings.

A childhood re-read that still hit! And this cover is literally everything. Adventurous and lighthearted but had depth. Taran and Hen Wen! I missed this world.

Taran is incredibly whiny and I just found myself not caring. I'd read a couple pages and not remember what was on the pages.
For many years I have only seen the animated Disney version of the first two books in this series. While this might be part of a high fantasy series, I have felt that these books might be a good intro to the fantasy genre. One of the most important themes that appears in this novel, as well as in the others, is to never judge people on first impressions because they might surprise you when you get to know them.

I know this is a kids book, written for kids, and to appeal to kids, but Taran's incessant whining KILLED me. Otherwise, it was cute and I enjoyed most of it. Taran's whining costs an entire star, though.
