Ships and pirates and sentient objects. All things I historically have just not cared about in any capacity nor happily sought out stories of, and yet Robin Hobb managed to make me care for this story far more than I eve expected to.
I liked the direction and the ending of the book; it came together well, without, to me, feeling rushed, and tying up the plot points I was worried about being loose. I have only a few small complaints; the habit that appeared in this last book of switching POVS mid paragraph, for one, but it happened rarely enough that it could be ignored.I did also find the relationship between Malta and Reyn kind of strange to navigate -- i think it could have really benefited to remove the frankly uncomfortable dynamic by making Reyn canonically younger, as he truly did act and read like a teenager anyway, & the constant focus on Malta's 'smallness' in the narration was also quite disconcerting; obviously she is small, she is 14.
Nonetheless, brought out enough emotions for me that it's 5 stars.
