I think I'm just not smart enough to understand or enjoy The Master and Margarita (I find Russian classics very difficult to read, that's why I usually stay away from them). I really struggled with it from the beginning. I failed to see any symbolism because so many absurd things were happening at once. The more I read the more confused I became. I don't know if it was because of the various plotlines, or the numerous characters, but I found myself turning back pages just trying to get a grip of what was meant to be happening. As satire goes this just didn't do anything for me. Is this an all-time masterpiece of world literature? Absolutely. Did I enjoy reading it? Not really. Was it tough going? God, yes! Glad I read it, though.

this book's strength was absolutely the comedy. It was genuinely very funny, even when it wasn't at its most absurd!
I did find it a slow start, and with so many storylines, I didn't care about each and every single one, but it really picked up in the second book.
One of those things where I didn't necessarily enjoy every second of it but I got what it was trying to say and I think it was avant-garde but effective in sending that message.
I think it wasn't necessarily FOR me and I was definitely hoping for something different but I am glad I read it.

I envy all those 5-star reviewers who connected to the story on such a deep level. I found it difficult to follow the chaos and the excessive characters. Time to move on!

It's hard to do much when reviewing a classic, and this seems to be one of those books that is a lot more meaningful when you are well-versed in the politics, attitudes, etc. of the time. I did some research to push myself along, but I would've appreciated reading this in an academic environment to help uncover as much of The Master and Margarita's thematic depth as possible.
The story itself is enjoyable, and the characters are very rich. Humor is on-point, and the novel is very well balanced between a number of different emotional baselines. I was unsure what to feel a lot of the time, but the ending helped to soldifiy my understanding of "what the novel is going for".
I can understand why this is such a beloved classic.

a wonderful book full of magic, mischief and satire

Էս անգամ մատիտս առա ձեռքս ու ԵԶԱԿԻ ԲԱՆ՝ սկսեցի նշումներ ու մեկնաբանություններ անել գրելուս ընթացքում։ Հավես էր։ Ավելի լավ հասկացա հեղինակի հուշումները, ակնարկները, թե որ հերոսին ա Բուլգակովը համակրում ու ում՝ չէ, թե ինչ ու ինչի համար ա անում Վոլանդի свита-ն։
Էլ չասած դրվագները, որոնցից այլ գրողներ հաստատ ոգեշնչվել են։

Լրիվ գուշակել Բուլգայկովի միտքը կարծում եմ չի ստացվի երբեք, բայց փորձել հաստատ արժի ու անընդհատ։
