This requires a lot of Biblical knowledge, which I just don't have.

Mmm 2.5 stars? I both did and did not enjoy this one. The story was kinda fun, looking past its chaotic structure, and I liked Woland and the gang. Rarely is there a book about demons that I don't find entertaining! But the sexism and racism - which LITERALLY came out of nowhere - really put me off.

worthy of a second slower read

Simultaneously hilarious and deathly serious (how could life in Moscow in the 20’s be otherwise?). Fast paced, yet extremely thought provoking. What else can you ask for? Two thumbs way up.

interesting, but strange. a little disconnected for my liking. i didn't want to focus. beautiful in it's quirkiness, but i guess i wanted something a little more wholesome in story - the first part of the book is little more than aimless wandering amongst the people of moscow. i can't even write a decent review, this book has left me so frazzled.

one of those books i think i will have to try reading again in the future.

Utterly brilliant and thought provoking. My only complaint is that I waited 15 years to read it. Globally, the text is structured in a way that drives the reader forward; locally, the sentences and word choice...chef's kiss.

this is not a one-read book. This is a book that requires multiple reads, as there are many rich themes. This book also needs discussion.

My biggest challenge is the character names. I'll have to read it again just to get the characters straight.

5 stars.
