The story revolves around a robot named Tik-Tok who is created with advanced artificial intelligence. I have to be honest and admit sometimes it was difficult to figure out what exactly made the main character so different from humans. Tik-Tok interacts with some of the worst examples of the human race and experiences various situations, then he begins to develop a mixture of contempt and curiosity towards them. This makes the character to go on a path of killing, stealing and doing all kind of crimes imaginable in a series of "experiments" tough, sometimes is stated he does some of those things for mere gratification.
I laughed in some of the scenes for their satirical tone and the absurdity of the situation, however I found the book to be overloaded with different scenarios that follow each other, turning the book in a chaos in some chapters. I felt that the author compresses too much information into few pages, which can make the reading experience overwhelming.

Starts well and there's a really good story in there but it just decent into chaos... If it had stayed linear I think I'd have liked it a lot more.

A pretty disturbing book--Asimov's three rules of robotics turned on it's head. For the most part, it seems like it is a satire of American culture, though I felt like Sladek's message was a bit convoluted for me really quite grasp. Perhaps it was absurdist...no matter what, it was a thoroughly original book, and I've read nothing quite like it, even though it was first published in 1983.

Tik-Tok is about a robot who decides to subvert the Asimovian laws of robotics (which any sensible person must cheer) and manages to secretly wage a campaign of crime and murder across the country before, in a Being There sort of moment, becoming Vice-President of the United States. There's a lot of dark humour, gratuitous violence, and not terribly well drawn analogies with slavery and racism.

What happens robots achieve a certain level of consciousness to rival the level of humanity’s? This book isn’t a far off answer. It took a while to get into it and it could be convoluted at times, especially when a new setting is introduced. But once you get going, it’s a breeze. Great recommendation! Thank you! :)
