We never really found out the truth of the mystery subplot and the romance felt too sudden near the end

The characters were annoying. While I understood the MC's inner turmoil, her inner dialogue was repetative. The side characters Luke and Britney, had absolutely no charm or appeal to them.
It was all purple prose. The author was overly descriptive and somehow didn't actually make a clear picture of what they were refering to. Also, no teenager thinks "the trees look like they couldn't be bothered to grow any father up the moutain side" - and that was the entire book.
Also, this is definitely one of those YA books that truly caters to teenagers. I've read and related to a fair share of YA books, but this one definitely felt more juvenile.

This book felt like a fever dream. Also gave like Jumanji vibes ???: interesting plot and quest but just no reason for any of the stuff that’s happening? Romance felt forced.

Love that the romance subplot of the story was between two childhood rivals bc their banter was so cute and from the reader’s perspective you could definitely tell just how much they acted like they didn’t get along knowing Cara and Zach wanted each other🤭 the epilogue ended off on a cliffhanger so I’m interested in seeing what the plot of the potential sequel will look like.
