I’m not really sure how to begin, so I’m going to start this review by answering a few questions. Do I love this book? Yes. Do I love the characters? Yes. Do I loveWarner Aaron? YES! Do I recommend this book to everyone? YES YES YES! Go read it people.
Okay. Now on to the explanations and stuff.
Juliette is awesome now. She’s so much stronger and way more confident than she was before. She finally accepted her powers and she is ready to fight back. I love how it took her a while to become this new and improved version of herself. Because change takes time. I think that’s true for everyone. I mean, I tried to get rid of my habit of cracking my knuckles and I’m still trying :).
“I’ve always known, deep down, who should be leading this resistance.
It should be me.”
You know how when you get older and read your old diaries and think “I was so dumb, oh my god, what was I thinking?” No? Well, I do. Juliette is like that. She knows that she used to be “a scared, broken girl”, and she was always stuck in her own head, always thinking that she doesn’t deserve to live and the whole world hates her, but she’s not like that anymore. Now, she doesn’t need anyone to come and save her every time something bad happens. She can save herself.
Kenji, I think, is the best friend anyone could have. I wish I have a Kenji. He is such a real character and I love it. He’s the person you turn to when you need to smile, he gives the best advice and he won’t ever hesitate to tell you what you need to hear, no matter how bad it is. I actually teared up a little when Kenji said:
‘…some days I don’t want to laugh,’ he says. ‘I don’t want to be funny. I don’t want to give a shit about anything. Some days I just want to sit on my ass and cry. All day long’
How true is that? I think everyone has had one of those days. I certainly have. Kenji and Juliette’s friendship is one of my favorite things about the entire series. And of course, his funny comments about everything always makes me laugh. So I think we need an entire book focusing on Kenji and his funny moments.
“I’m not dramatic, okay? My presence just commands a certain kind of attention”
I know a lot of people really don’t like Adam in this book, but even though I don’t love his character, I can’t hate him either. He was hurt, he thought Juliette died and it was his fault, and now she comes back and keeps defending Warner. I think his actions in this book is just a defense mechanism. Some people use humor or sarcasm, Adam turns mean. Because he’s not funny like Kenji, he can’t cry or hurt people with his skin like Juliette, and he’s definitely the opposite of Warner, so I think it’s understandable. Of course, some of the things he said were very harsh and Juliette shouldn’t have to put up with it, but I see where he’s coming from. I think it shows that no matter how much he said he loves Juliette, it’s not enough. Because if it is, he would be happy to see her alive no matter what he thinks is going on between her and Warner. His brother, James, will always come first and I think that’s admirable. Adam is a good guy, he’s just always stuck in really bad situations.
Warner is such a great character, and to be honest, I really don’t know how to write about him. It’s like trying to explain why you love chocolate. Or cheese. It’s difficult because you know you love these things and you know why you love them but you can’t answer when someone else asks you why you love chocolate/cheese. You could say “I love chocolate because it’s sweet”, and it would be true, but it’s not enough. Do you see my problem here? Warner. Aaron Warner Anderson is the perfect example of why you should never judge people when you don’t really know them. Juliette thought he was a horrible, horrible person but it turns out everything he did was for a reason. He loves Juliette so much, and no matter how much she hurt him before, he is always there for her. He doesn’t like her friends, but he helps them because that’s what she wants. AND, he also has wonderful soaps.
As usual, the writing is beautiful and I wish the book is longer, but I understand why it stopped where it did. Like I said before, the story isn’t about Juliette saving the world from the Reestablishment, it’s about how she became someone stronger, how she came to love herself the way she is and stop listening to all the bad things the world said about her. By defeating the Reestablishment, she accomplished that. And while I don’t think her story is over, I don’t think this book has anything else to tell.
Anyway, I really love this book. If you haven’t read it yet, go read it. If you have, I would love to hear what you think about it!

I didn’t know that this was supposed to be the last book originally, so I kept expecting something bad to happen again, but it was a mostly happy “ending”. Warner and Juliette forever. I always hated Adam and I feel very justified now. I’m excited to see how the story continues after the original ending.
