M Is for Malice

Sue Grafton

After basically being sidelined in the lackluster previous installment, Kinsey comes roaring back to the center of the action in this one. Her investigation of the wealthy Malek family and their missing brother comes to a startling climax with an ending that I didn't predict but that in hindsight made perfect sense. Glad to see the series find its footing again. I always enjoy my time with this series and Kinsey feels like a good friend at this point.

I'm reading the Kinsey Millhone novels very much out of sequence, and having only read two previously arrived at M Is For Malice with no real preconceptions. I was very pleasantly surprised.

The novel has a very "old school" feel, just the one murder which takes place over half way through the book, giving each character depth and nuance before demolishing their worlds. Millhone, who is a brilliant creation, solves the mystery the old-fashioned way; by interviewing suspects, finding clues and making solid deductions. No sudden shark-jumps, no car chases or gun fights, just solid, enjoyable, character led detection. A lovely, thoroughly enjoyable mystery.

This had an interesting premise, but towards the end, it fell a bit short for me because I kind of guessed around midway through. Overall, it was a quick read, and some twists were executed quite well. I might have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books in the series.

The last few books just haven't been very good.

This is the last of Grafton's alphabet msytery series that I read. I think I had just tired of them.

This was another enjoyable one. Glad to see Deets back. Interesting mystery. Nice to see A bit of introspection by Ms Millhone

Glad the book after L was so much better. This story was really interesting. I felt for Kinsey in this one. I cared about the victim, wanted to know who did it. Fascinated by his family.

Finally some love for Kinsey, and not just one admirer, but two!

I can understand why this book is a popular one in the series: it's got some soul, the mystery isn't too fussy and the reveal is interesting.
