Not really a huge fan.  It was interesting to hear a Soviet perspective on the revolution, but the book itself wasn't incredibly interesting.  It wasn't really like an academic book, so if he was just trying to write down his thoughts on Russian history I think a different medium (like a series of essays) would have been more effective.

However, I don't think that was Pasternak's intention.  I think he was trying to write a novel, but it felt rather flat to me.  I am going to watch the movie now, because I cannot believe that the story would make for a successful movie without a ton of alterations.

I also don't really know why this book is considered a romance.  At least that is how my book-jacket describes it.  It is a terrible romance if that is what you're reading it for.

It's also just too long, but maybe that's because I don't understand the point of the book or what it's trying to do.  I've heard some people (maybe on Reddit?) say that this book is a first look at Russian authors reacting to the modernist movement.  IDK if that's true, but I've read a lot of modernists that I like more than this.

Kinda cool how the CIA pushed so hard for this to get international recognition.  Probably shows that I'm more susceptible to social engineering than I'd like to believe.  I don't think I would have ever even heard of this book except for all the work that the US did to popularize it.

Dr Zhivago is not a very sympathetic protagonist...

I've wanted to read this book for a long time, and I finally did.  It was a long slog.  While parts of the book were fascinating, there was too much war and philosophy for me to truly enjoy it.  The translation was excellent.  It had lots of notes that helped explain the references Pasternak was using.  Without these, it would have been difficult for me to comprehend.  I can appreciate this book, primarily since it was written against the government's wishes.
