Let’s face it, we all deal differently when life hands us lemons. For the main characters in this book, I think the two of them actually split the whole lemon orchard between them.

Eli is a firefighter who, while driving home after a shift one night, stumbles upon a car accident. Though he tries, he is unable to save the driver of the car that was hit. Feeling like a failure, his life takes a downward spiral. He begins drinking. He leaves his family, friends and the job that he considered to be his vocation, and most of all, his faith in in God.

Karlee is a school teacher who lost her fiancé to a drunk driver. In the blink of an eye, the life she had planned, her future with the man she loved, and all hopes of her own family were taken from her. But when everything seems to go so wrong, she maintains her faith.

When Karlee stumbles upon the new stranger in town, she recognizes the haunted look in him and tries to reach out. When a house fire leaves Karlee’s young student and her two older siblings without a home, and their only parent hospitalized, Eli and Karlee work together to help the kids, and eventually each other. They become each other’s deliverance, and redemption.

I had the pleasure of reading this book prior to release and thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesn’t matter what your beliefs are based on, we can all appreciate the desolation and emptiness we feel at the loss of another. The anguish and misery that, for some of us can bring out self-destructive behavior, and for others, unwavering desire to persist through life.

This book is a great example of how two people deal with adversity differently, and still overcome.

Though different from the Wounded Souls series, the appearance of some of Amanda’s most cherished characters, is a great surprise. I can’t wait for Elijah’s best friend’s story. I got enough of a background to Charlie to know that it will be just as exceptional!
