Oh how I love Chloe’s writing!
The absence of Ethan was felt in this book. It was weird not having him them and I felt like Merit; like I had lost of part of me.
We follow Merit as she navigates through her life after the death of her master and lover, Ethan. As she learns how to live and do her job without his guidance. It was an incredibly wild ride and I hated it. I get the fact that she needed to grown not only as a person but as a Vampire, but God Damn you Chloe how could you do this to us?
Regardless of having no Ethan, I still loved the story and the Arc but I hated the cliff hanger because now I have to go and buy then next one ASAP.
Jonah, oh Jonah. Thank you Chloe for thowing in this huge curve ball. It was a good one. I will forever the grateful for this character. He’s funny, fierce, and loyal and exactly the kind of stability Merit needs in her life and someone who can kind of challenge her.
Chloe threw a lot of things at us in this book, so much stuff that I couldn’t think who was behind everything and that’s what kept you reading.
This was such a good book to add to Merit’s story and I can’t wait to see where we end up next!

2020 update
Spoilers abound.
Eight years later this book still irks me, but I would rate it a solid 3 stars rather than the 2 I originally gave.
I still think the resurrection ending is super lame. Not only does it feel like a giant cop out, but it introduces the possibility of an Ethan/Jonah love triangle. I think it’s a complete lack of vision or creativity.
That being said, I do better appreciate the rift between Merit and Mallory. While the character Merit is forced into the position of being the “perfect” female main character (the Chosen One if you will) and therefore doesn’t have the same scope for character development, Mallory is wide open for all kinds of growth and this is the opportunity to bring it about.
Still, while the pacing and writing seem to have improved in this book, it is one of my least favorites in the series.
Original 2012 review
Well I am at a complete loss of what to say. Nor do I exactly how to rate this book. I've changed my mind three times already in the past five minutes.
Ridiculous. That is the word that I think completely sums up this fifth installment of the Chicagoland Vampires.
Ms. Neill, let me get this straight: you've spent four books maintaining and building a relationship between Merit and Mallory and you decide to throw that all away for some overblown plot twist? A relationship that provided the snarky dialogue which made your series a success nevertheless.
You made a critical decision to kill off Ethan, all the while introducing a possible love interest replacement for him, and then you completely undo all your work (not to mention screw with your readers' emotions) and bring him back in the lamest cliche ever invented. A resurrection spell? Seriously, that's the best you can do? And what is going to happen to poor Jonah? Are we going to be forced to endure a love triangle? Isn't that for teenage vampire books? Can't we be beyond that as adults?
Finally, the entire novel was a ever, ever so slow build up of pressure and drama, then it completely exploded into an ending covering less than five pages?
Your readers deserved more. I deserved more.
Oh Ms. Neill, I'm terribly vexed with you right now.

Pretty good, definitely my least favorite in the series so far. The Ethan situation *not really a spoiler* seems like it was a waste and hype. The book definitely lost it's most compelling dynamic by not Ethan!!!
Awesome
I really love Neill’s version of Chicago and all the supernaturals that live there. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

I strongly disliked the way the previous book ended so I wasn't sure if I wanted to even start this one. All in all, not bad, but there was a massive change at the end so I think I will reserve judgement until they resolve it a bit more in the next book...
This was a witty and fun take on an Old story line!
All that said ... I LOVED THIS BOOK! These books keep getting better! Whoa ... Paranormal Registry?!? How will Cadogan House handle that ... or the Paranormals of Chicago that is?
I look forward to more bad assery by Merritt & Crew!

Sometimes formulaic plot devices are very satisfying.
