Weren't you so glad at the end?? I was so mad at Catcher for not noticing! I had that part partially figured out. I think I had an inkling about Ethan but couldn't figure out how that might work! I am so glad I got to this party late, because if I had had to wait a year to read this one I would have been upset! I cried and cried after Hard Bitten, I am glad I could immediately start this one

In the aftermath of Ethan's death, Merit has to continue her life without him and learn to defeat the new enemies and problems, including all the changes in the House due to the arrival of the GP representative and the mysterious magic forces threatening to destroy Chicago, on her own. I loved seeing how she confronted life without Ethan, not giving up after his death, but instead becoming a stronger and more self-reliant person. Of course, I also totally loved the ending which I think creates a lot of interesting possibilities for the next book.
The mystery with the black water and the red sky in Chicago was also very well written in my opinion, it was different from everything in the previous books and it was intriguing enough.
The thing that I didn't like in this book was Mallory which irritated me immensely in every scene with her and even every mention of her. I get that her behavior served a purpose that was very important to the plot, but first, it was predictable what she's involved in (except the part with Ethan, but that's just details), and second, I just don't like books to irritate me, whatever the reason.

This is the fifth book in the series and I think I am becoming unimpressed with the series. A lot of the same old stuff over and over again. Yes, we get it, humans think vampires are evil - blah, blah, blah.
This story was interesting with the magical elements involved - but the culprit was evident right from the beginning. As soon as they said what that particular character was up to - I was like, oh it's them for sure! And it totally was.
Most interesting of all, there was a resurrection this book. I was hopeful at the end of the last book (not that I wanted that character to die) that things would change up a little instead of being quite so formulaic. Alas, they are back for who knows how long. Probably forever with my luck.
Also! I know it's maniacal of me to say, but I am really happy with what happened to Mallory. In my last review I said that I was starting to really not like her - and now I feel completely vindicated for that feeling.
Who knows where Chloe Neill will take these characters next. Hopefully, she springs something big.

Unfortunately for me, from the moment I finished with Hard Bitten, I started researching Drink Deep. So, knowing the whole story beforehand (I hate not knowing what I'm getting into since I'm so invested in these characters and Ethan's dying broke my heart), I didn't have high expectations for this book. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I was as engrossed in Drink Deep as I have been all the other CLV books. And when Malik threw Frank out of the house? I was cheering!! Great continuation of the story and maybe there'll be another vamp out there for Jonah...because for me, there's no other vamp for Merit than Ethan.
I love Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires series, and cried at the end of Hard Bitten. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Drink Deep. And boy are there surprises here!
drey’s thoughts:
I’m going to start by saying that this isn’t one of my favorite covers. (sorry) Having read the book, I get the red cover and all the stuff in the background. But this is so not how I imagine my Merit. My favorite cover so far has to be for Hard Bitten. What about yours?
But. We’re not here to talk covers. We can do that on my facebook page where there’s albums (& albums!) with nothing but covers, so I’ll get to the review now. Promise.
Now, most fans hated the ending in Hard Bitten, and Chloe Neill has asked that we trust her and where she’s taking this storyline. So we did, albeit somewhat reluctantly. After all, you can only do so much when one of your favorite characters is taken off the table…
Drink Deep takes Merit on yet another journey – this one filled with grief and frustration. The grief needs no explanation. The frustration? Because the GP sent a complete douche to evaluate Cadogan House. As in, let’s-hit-him-over-the-head-and-bury-him-in-the-sunlight (ha ha) douche. Except that nobody in Cadogan would do such a thing, of course. And if items one and two weren’t enough to deal with, the sky turns red, the lake turns black, and everybody’s pointing the fingers at – you guessed it – the vamps.
Merit being Merit, she goes off and does what she does best – investigate. This time her sidekick is the Red Guard from Grey House, Jonah, who happens to have a thing for her. But it’s only been two months since the events that sent the world gasping in Hard Bitten, and she’s not ready to move on. He’s cool though, and I really like Jonah. He’s “normal,” i.e. not stuck in a previous century like a certain ex-Master Vampire we know (and we really shouldn’t talk badly about the dead…), he has a sense of humor, he’s smart, and he’s understanding. Renaissance vamp, anyone?
Unfortunately, the investigation leads Merit to a couple avenues she doesn’t really want to head down. And all I can tell you about it is, you’ll be able to guess if you know the story so far and have paid attention in previous installments… Not to say I like it, but hey after Hard Bitten you can bet that Ms. Neill isn’t one to pull the punches if it furthers her storyline. The ending isn’t surprising, as she builds up to it throughout the book, but it’s not one I particularly care for. I know, I know, she has fans to satisfy… And I’m not complaining (much), and I will definitely pick up the next book – Biting Cold - when it comes out next August (that cover might be my new CLV favorite!). Thank goodness I have an overflowing TBR pile to keep me occupied till then!
drey’s rating: Excellent! Yes, I (kinda) complained, but I can’t take points off because I didn’t like how this story ended, can I? Besides, Merit grows as a character, and that’s more important to me.

I gave it a 3 out of 5 because it was only so-so. I can honestly say this is the sleeper of the series. For 2/3 of the book, it was just missing something. (And we all know what was missing, or should I say who was missing) I'll read the next book in the series to see where we are going with this, but I'll go into it with mixed feelings.
As with the previous CV books, there was a great start, a lull, then a bombastic ending. And, boy, was this end freaking bombastic! I saw part of it coming a little ways in, but not all of it.
Also, looking forward to seeing where it goes from here, both with Mallory and Ethan... (though I would like to see more with Jonah.)
I'd also like to see someone, anyone, beat the shit out of Morgan.
