When I read book 4 I had a feeling this book would decide whether or not I stayed with the series. Not true. If any thing this book leaves me more conflicted.

In the last book Merit learned that the mayor wasn't such a nice guy and in the process Ethan, Master of Cadogan, and once lover of Merit was killed. Needless to say Chicagoland Vamp friends were up in arms. I admit I never fall in love with vampires. All my book crushes are magic users, werewolves or fairies, so when I fell in love with Ethan I was a little surprised and very pleased. Finally a vampire who grew into something I liked.

Now in Drink Deep we find a grieving Merit, trying to pull herself together after losing Ethan. Merit's idolizing a dead Ethan, maybe in part because she's finally realizing how much she depended on him. Luckily Merit isn't the type to mope and get nothing done. Instead we're treated to Jonah, Grey House vampire and member of the RG. He's playing the part of Merit's partner now and of course has a crush on Merit. I'm going to quit whining about how all men go weak in the knees around Merit now. I promise.

So, the latest issue is that Chicago seems to be falling apart, with the lake going black and worse. It doesn't help that Merit is having nightmares about Ethan. Oh and the GP has dumped a friend to spy and tattle on Cadogan House who starts enforcing ridiculous rules and rationing blood. We get a tour of Chicago and an introduction to some new sups as Merit tries to put things right despite the GP's continued interference. It's entertaining, but it admittedly feels a little empty. Jonah is fun and it's enjoyable to watch Merit learning about the world around her, but the constant road blocking of the GP made me want to scream "revolt!" all book long!

The end is what got to me. It was shocking and unpleasant and I did not enjoy it or feel like all the characters acted within what I would expect from people I've known for 4-5 books now.

So, SPOILERS: (You've been warned).
Spoiler Mallory?! Seriously?! That was blindsiding and I'm expecting an explanation next book! That was so far out of character... And I'm glad Ethan's back, but man, poor Jonah! No wonder men are bitter towards Merit once they break up, she throws them away fast. Careful Ethan! And if Cadogan House and the rest of Chicago (except Morgan, forget him) don't revolt against the crown the way they should have back in the Revolution by the next book I'll be joining the protesters outside the gates.

I just dont' know what to think anymore... On one hand, yes, Ms. Neill fixed the thing that totally pissed me off about Hard Bitten but then again, she totally screwed up another of my beloved characters. Once again we have a WTF cliffhanger, only this time we have to wait till... next fall for the resolution of it? There is a reason I waited to read this one, usually I pre-order and read it the day it comes out because I have always been in love with this world and most especially the wonderful characters, this time I just could not bring myself to read it right away. What a total disappointment.

I love the drama of this series. Why is everybody in love with Merit if all the vamps are supposed to be so beautiful and awesome? I need Jonah to find his own squeeze. I also needed a better reunion between Ethan and Merit. I really did like that the book had a lot of conflict but not really enough ass kicking like the other books. Needless to say I plan on finishing this series.

Gawd he is soooooo annoying!!!

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. There were some Harry Potter similarities that annoyed me--I don't like when I feel like a book as blatantly copied another. But I like the integration of Jonah & am glad the relationship is what it is. However, I was waiting the entire book for the resurrection of a certain main character, and I think that tainted it for me. I'm glad for the ending, but wish it would have happened sooner!

It was so hard for me to get through this book. There were some parts that were skipped. There was a whole lot of internal monologuing and repeated information. I just got to the point where I just didn't care either. Why is Merit taking care of everything? I kind of get it, but then also not...

3.5 stars. . It took me a very, very long time to get throught this book, and I usually devour the Chicagoland Vampires books in a matter of hours. Sticking with the series, but this one was a weak link in the chain for me.

Fan-freaking-tastic!!!! Love this series!

Wow that was tedious to listen to.

LOVED this book! I don't think I have ever cried throughout a book so much! Not even Blood Promise by Richelle Mead and I cried a lot during that one! Every time she mentioned his name or something made me think of him I burst into tears! That really shows how much I have come to love and care for these characters! I can't believe how it ended either! I was so surprised! Can't wait to read the next one!
