Possibly the best book I’ve read all year. I loved everything about it, the cover, the story, the characters, how they developed, the dual story line, the learnings from the passage of time, the pace of the story, the way it was written, the way the #metoo story evolved over time, what the characters learn about themselves and how the events of one summer can impact the rest of your life.
Described as a ‘Conversation-starting book club debut”, I so want this to be a book club pick, I want to talk about it with everybody. It is a coming of age story, set in a Greek island, circa 20 years ago and today. There are loads of content warnings, so you may want to check. This book kept reminding me of My Dark Vanessa, so if you liked that this is similar.
With thanks to @netgalley @randomhouseuk and @transworld for the ARC. It’s published today in UK & Ireland.

I think this is a well written and intriguing story that is definitely worth the read if you're in the mood for something a bit dark and, at times, uncomfortable because it deals with some sad topics.
Rachel goes with her friend Caroline to a small Greek island at the end of their vacation. What should have been a short stay results in something more when Rachel (17) meets an older man, Alistair. If you are like me, then perhaps you're getting the idea that this is going to turn into a bad situation. There is definitely a little too much attention for the younger women on the island by older men.
While this story plays out, the present time is also being told every other chapter. Rachel is now married... (happily??? Doesn't seem so much??) And when they visit the island, Rachel seems a bit unbalanced by her past catching up to her.
This was a difficult read for me considering the topic, but overall, I thought it was well done.
Content warnings for rape, sexual assault, pregnancy issues

This book started off being an easy to read twin timeline story of Rachel now and the summer she turned 18, it started to hint at some dark themes around the edges of that past time which our narrator didn't seem aware of herself either.
I guess this shows how flawed our human experience is, we only see what we see and most times it's not the full story of what has happened around us. This is compounded when there is some form of bias via emotion involved as well which means we can ignore some behaviours or explain them to ourselves in harmless ways.
This is one of those books where you wonder what you would have done in the situations described and hope that it's not still happening somewhere out there .....
It's a good, thought provoking read that needs to be discussed far and wide!
