This is a lovely book. Beautiful writing, and beautiful illustrations. A thoughtful, soothing kind of book. It tells you how to be patient and wait to see a whale. That you have to keep your eye out all the time looking for a whale if you want to see one. It describes the things you should avoid looking at while you concentrate on looking for a whale.

Age: K-2
Animal: Whale
Familiar Experience: Waiting
Emotion: patience

For all that little boy's patience, for all the distractions along the way, for the sweet roses and the pirate ship, the small insects and the fluffy clouds above, his patience finally pays off. Accompanied with fantastic colors and illustrations.

I'm not sure why I love this so much, but it is honestly just so beautiful and tranquil. It has such an old fashioned quality to it.

What a delightful, funny, and whimsical story! I love the inclusion of the dog.

clever and pretty!

Lovely in every way.

This was almost exactly like a Ruth Krauss/Maurice Sendak collaboration... it reminded me so much of A Hole is to Dig insofar as the sweet, simple illustrations and dreamy, whimsical text. I hate using the word whimsical to describe a children's book, but it seems almost the right fit for this. It's a quiet whimsy, though, and perhaps that's what makes it so endearing to me.

A charming little picture book in the tradition of 'Runaway Bunny.' I say this because of the illustration style (as my colleague put it: "a quiet book"). No loud graphics here. For children who have a bit of an attention span, this could be a new classic.

This book is like a little masterpiece; the words are poetic, the illustrations are a like a watercolor painting, light and airy. In this book, the reader will learn things to do (and things not to do) as they wait to see a whale. I like that it teaches children that they may have to wait a long time for great things and that there are constructive (and some not so constructive) things they could do while they wait. The book is wordless in the end but the pictures are plenty.

Stunning in its lyrical prose, illustrations and incredible creativity. One of my new favorite children's books!
